Crews are spending this week painting the inside and outside of the bell tower at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Sausalito. Two bells reside in the tower about 100 feet off the ground. The bells arrived in December 1909. Cast in copper and tin in St. Louis, Mo., and tuned to the key of G, the larger of the bells is named 'Virginia' and the smaller bell 'Edward.' In 2004, after periods of storage, the bells were hoisted aloft and hung in the bell tower. Kunst Bros. Painting Contractor Inc. of San Rafael is doing the work this week. At top, Nick Kunst takes notes as he looks at the bells.
